Mentalism, the power of reading minds, seems like a supernatural power but local mentalist Mark Wong does not claim to have any such powers. Instead, he relies on psychology and showmanship (among others skills) to dish out his performances with flair and style.

The mind reader and recent psychology graduate has been performing for over a decade and found his love for magic in his early youth. He credits being able to bring smiles to strangers’ faces as part of his motivation for pursuing this unconventional path.

Hello! How did you hear about Kalpha and where do you usually host your Sharing Sessions?

I learned of Kalpha when Jay reached out to me and the East is preferred, if not, central.

Do give us (and our Learners) a brief history of yourself

I have been performing both locally and internationally for over a decade. I specialize in mentalism, the field of mind reading, which combines my love for magic and my Degree in Psychology.

What is one inaccurate stereotype about magic?

Many people think that magic is all about fast hands. Actually, it really isn’t. Nothing in what I teach or perform in my professional repertoire involves “fast hands”

What is the last thing you shared with someone?

I just shared some psychology and social skills tips with my friend regarding interacting with other people

What is the best thing that you have learned?

“If you fight for your limitations, you get to keep them”. This phrase really struck a chord with me when I heard it and it has played quite a part in shaping the person that I am today.

While it is good for people to realize their limitations and constantly check themselves in order to improve and push their limits, we also often hear of people lamenting about how they are not good enough or that they cannot do this or that.

I believe that as long as you have a goal in mind and constantly work towards it, you can achieve whatever you set out to do. Don’t fall prey to your own brain telling you that you can’t do it!

What is one thing about your life that you would not change?

Performing magic. It has opened so many doors for me over the years and I would definitely do it all over again in a heartbeat.

What got you hooked onto magic?

It was the “cool” thing to do in school when I was younger but it was really rewarding to be able to bring smiles to people that I didn’t even know so I continued doing it.

What has been the best part about doing magic?

Magic transcends languages and cultures. Most importantly, it allows me to make other people feel happy.
